Voices
"It might be a little cynical, but you could almost figure out what Jesus said by looking at our history and naming the opposite of what we did! We keep worshiping the messenger, keeping Jesus up on statues and images, so we can avoid what Jesus said. It's the best smokescreen in the world. We just keep saying, "We love Jesus." The more we talk about Jesus, the less we'll do what he said. That's the way the ego fools itself. And in this case, it's the way culture, nations and even the churches have fooled themselves." ~Richard Rohr
"Truth has nothing to do with words. Truth can be likened to the bright moon in the sky. Words, in this case, can be likened to a finger. The finger can point to the moon's location. However, the finger is not the moon. To look at the moon, it is necessary to gaze beyond the finger, right?" ~Huineng

RETHINK AFGHANISTAN AND RICE & SPICE DINNER The Peace Coalition is teaming up with the Big Muddy Independent Media Center and the Gaia House-Interfaith Center to prepare and serve an Afghani inspired dinner on Friday, November 13th. Food preparation begins at 6 pm with dinner to be served at 7 pm.
The meal will be followed by a showing of Robert Greenwald's important new documentary Rethink Afghantistan that analyzes the consequences of eight years of U.S. military engagement. The film graphically documents how the military approach to Afghanistan is not succeeding and how further application of American military force will not bring stability to the country or security to our own.
With over 90 percent of U.S. funding in Afghanistan directed toward military purposes, non-military strategic options are not being pursued. The problems facing Afghan society are economic, social and political in nature, and require economic, social and political solutions. The U.S. can play a constructive role in Afghanistan by engaging civil society rather than by waging war.
Please contact the Interfaith Center, Aur Beck or Georgeann Hartzog, 521-4239 if you would like to help with preparations for dinner.

SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS WATCH CONVERGENCE ON FT. BENNING, GA Nov 20-22. The campaign to close the SOA/WHINSEC, so called "school of torturers," goes on. The movement has grown and expanded to include Latin American governments who have withdrawn their troops from training there. It continues in Congress with a proposal to investigate and close down this on-going symbol of anti-democratic militarism. This is still very relevant as the U. S. plans new military bases in Colombia and continues to struggle with the SOA trained coup leaders' illegal regime in Honduras.
The Vigil and Direct Action at Fort Benning, Georgia take place the weekend of Nov 20-22 in Columbus, Georgia, the home of Ft. Benning. Anyone interested in traveling to Columbus to take part in this years vigil is invited to contact Georgeann Hartzog, 521-4239. Information about the action, workshops, the issues, etc. is available at SOAW.org.
