"Allah is with those who restrain themselves."

~Qu'ran 16:128

"Seest thou what fasting does: it heals illnesses, drives out demons, removes wicked thoughts, makes the heart pure. If someone has even been seized by an impure spirit, let her or him know that this kind, according to the word of the Lord, 'goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.'"

~Matthew 17:21

"Fasting is the first principle of medicine."

What's New?

  • Ramadan Iftar Rice & Spice So "Iftar" translates to "fast breaking," but what does it actually mean? Why do Muslims fast for Ramadan and why are the evening meals so important? Learn about this and more, this Friday at Rice & Spice! Read more below!

  • Our Annual Watermelon Welcome is coming up! This Sunday we will be on the corner of Grand & 51 to welcome new and returning students with fresh chunks of watermelon. And it's all free! Find out what it's all about and how you can help below.

    This Week at Gaia House

    RAMADAN IFTAR RICE & SPICE
    FRIDAY, AUGUST 27 @ 6:00 PM

In the Islamic calendar, the holiest month is that of Ramadan. It is a month of fasting and intense spiritual commitment, and one of the Five Pillars of Islam. In the evening, after the sun has set, the fast is broken with a dinner. In fact, "Iftar" means "fast-breaking!"

We are extremely honored and excited to be able to host the Intercultural Dialogue Student Association, and grateful for the dinner and discussion they will be preparing. Please join us as we learn more about each other and ourselves at this important and inevitably delicious Slow Food dinner.

Cooking and fellowship will begin at 6:00 PM, but dinner will not begin until after sunset. RSVP via Facebook.

    ANNUAL WATERMELON WELCOME
    SUNDAY, AUGUST 29 @ NOON - 8:00 PM

Many years ago, SIUC Professor and Father of Sustainability R. Buckminster Fuller started the Watermelon Welcome as a way to help new students cool off and find a quick source of great community. We carry on that tradition today with our own upcoming event. More details will emerge as we get closer to the date, but there will definitely be fresh chunks of watermelon and other refreshments, and maybe even live music!

Come stop by for a quick slice or stay all day! Invite and bring your friends! You can also RSVP via Facebook.

If you are interested in helping to plan, facilitate, serve, or entertain for the Welcome, feel free to attend the next RSO Meeting, listed below.

    RSO MEETING!
    THURSDAY, AUGUST 26 @ 7:30 PM

We are blessed this year with a truly dynamite group of student leaders. Whether you're a student or just an interested community member, it's worth it to come see these folks in action

This week's meeting will be to plan the Watermelon Welcome in detail, as well as to elect officers for the school year. If you missed the last meeting and would like to be added to the ballot for President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer, please email Matthew Coleman

    INTERVEG POTLUCK
    THURSDAY, AUGUST 26 @ 6:00 PM

The InterVeg Forum series is gearing up for the fall and looking for interested parties to host discussions on vegetarianism, sustainability -- really food and anything related! In the meantime, the meals are still going strong! Not a vegetarian? Not a problem! All are welcome to come enjoy a good meal and a chance to play in the garden.

GAIA HOUSE INTERFAITH CENTER BOARD MEETING
    CARBONDALE UNITARIAN FELLOWSHIP
    MONDAY, AUGUST 30 @ 5:30 PM

All are welcomed to sit in

A COMPARITIVE LOOK AT ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS:
HOW DO WE INTEGRATE DIFFERENT VIEWS?
    TUESDAY, AUGUST 31 @ 8:00 PM

What does "going green" mean? There are many theoretical frameworks that seek to explain our relationships with our fellow living beings. There are also many practical questions to consider about how our actions can reflect and respond to those relationships.

Local community activist, poet, author, and teacher Treesong will offer an approach to all of these theories and practices that stress the importance of integrating the insights of many perspectives into our individual and group efforts to improve our ecological relationships.

Everyone is invited to this Introductory presentation! Donations suggested: $5 (pay what you can, if you can)

Sponsored by the Center for Spiritual Inquiry & Integral Education. For more information: contact R. Michael Fisher rmichaelfisher@gmail.com 529-1166
