Voices

"We may say that modern technology has deprived man of the kind of work that he enjoys most; creative, useful work with his hands and brains, and given him work of a fragmented kind, most of which he does not enjoy at all."

~E. F. Schumacher from his book Small is Beautiful

Gaia House Interfaith Center
Newsletter for August 3, 2010

What's new this week?

  • The First RSO Meeting of the School Year! Last year was one of the most active yet for the Gaia House Interfaith Center's Registered Student Organization. They secured two of the first Green Fee grants: one for InterVeg, and one for the rain barrels we are grateful to be using at the House. They also organized and cooked the annual Vegetarian Thanksgiving and sent a member off to Panama with the Peace Corps, to name a few things. What does this year have in store? Come to the meeting this Thursday at 7:30 to find out and be a part! Read more below.

  • The Vision Forum is up! Click here to visit our Vision Forum, where you can read about and contribute to our evolving vision! It's easy to sign up for an account and start posting!

  • Heat Wave! During the heat advisory, the upstairs of the building will be closed for safety reasons. Groups are welcome to meet downstairs, and we'll have the A/C on for you.

  • A Call for Caulkers Please email the office if you have experience caulking and would like to help. If you want to help but don't know how, we are also very grateful for any donations of caulk or caulk guns. Thank you for helping us keep it together!

    This Week at Gaia House

    RSO MEETING
    THURSDAY, AUGUST 5 @ 7:30 PM

All are warmly welcomed to this first meeting of the RSO for the 2010-2011 academic year. We plan to discuss fall programming, volunteer and outreach opportunities, and Vegetarian Thanksgiving, to name a few things. Is there something you'd like to lead or learn this semester? Ideas are welcome! This will also be a great opportunity to meet other students and supportive community members and start building up a network of who's here this year, so don't miss out!

    INTERVEG POTLUCK
    THURSDAY, AUGUST 5 @ 6:00 PM

The InterVeg Forum series is lying fallow for the summer, but the meals are still going strong! Not a vegatarian? Not a problem! All are welcome to come enjoy a good meal and a chance to play in the garden. Those tomatoes are about ready to fall off the vine!

    RICE & SPICE
    FRIDAY, AUGUST 6 @ 6:00 PM

This week we have Michael Batinski and Ginny Hoffman preparing gezpacho, a spicy summer soup. All are welcome to come and enjoying cooking and eating together.

We are looking for main chefs for the summer and fall to showcase their food and culture. Interested in being a chef? Feel free to email Aur Beck if you'd like to coordinate your own slow-food meal. Send a list of ingredients (within our budget) you need us to get so we can help you to prepare and share your tasty food.

SOIL CHORUS CHANT & SONG CIRCLE
    SUNDAY, AUGUST 8 @ 3:00 PM

This is a gathering to share songs and chants of an Earth-centered nature. New people are always welcome! If you have a favorite chant or song, bring it along. If you have a drum and would like to drum, bring that along too. And if you're new to chanting and have no chants or songs of your own, then you are especially encouraged to attend. :) We have more than enough to share.

Marleen Shepherd invites those interested to join her in examining the scholarly search for Jesus' actual words and deeds through the eyes of the controversial Jesus Seminar. The Seminar is comprised of more than 150 scholars from disciplines such as social anthropology, Biblical history and textual analysis, on a quest for the historical Jesus. This study is a non-dogmatic exploration of the historical Jesus.
