A Call for Caulkers

Dear Friends,

As we continue our efforts to revive Gaia House Interfaith Center and improve its sustainability, we will soon be caulking up the windows and walls.

Many hands make light work, and we are looking to our wonderfully diverse community for anyone who wants to help with the effort!

Please email the office if you have experience caulking and would like to help.

If you want to help but don't know how, we are also very grateful for any donations of caulk or caulk guns.

Thank you for helping us keep it together!

    This Week at Gaia House

    GAIA HOUSE INTERFAITH CENTER HOSPITALITY
WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
    WEDNESDAY, JULY 21 @ 4:30 PM

Maurine Pyle, co-director of Gaia House Interfaith Center, will lead a community workshop to explore our collective concept of hospitality. All are welcome, especially volunteers, students, board members, and community members who visit Gaia House at least once a week to participate in its programs. Join us in an exploration of our 67-year-old culture of hospitality and where it might lead us in the future.

    INTERVEG POTLUCK
    THURSDAY, JULY 22 @ 6:00 PM

The InterVeg Forum series is laying fallow for the summer, but the meals are still going strong! Not a vegatarian? Not a problem! All are welcome to come enjoy a good meal and a chance to play in the garden. Those tomatoes are about ready to fall off the vine!

    RICE & SPICE
    FRIDAY, JULY 23 @ 6:00 PM

There is no scheduled chef or theme this week but that won't keep us from enjoying each others' company as we cook and eat together.

We are looking for main chefs for the summer and fall to showcase their food and culture. Interested in being a chef? Feel free to email Aur Beck if you'd like to coordinate your own slow-food meal. Send a list of ingredients (within our budget) you need us to get so we can help you to prepare and share your tasty food.

    SOCIAL ACTIVISM AND RELATIONSHIP:
    INTERVIEW WITH TOD KINGTON

The latest in a continuing series of interviews being conducted by R. Michael Fisher, Director of our Center for Spiritual Inquiry and Integral Education, this one vastly elaborates on how Nonviolent Communication relates to a subject near to our hearts. Read the full article that the excerpt below is taken from.

M: What stands out from the workshops you attended and what you saw in general communications at the [recent U.S. Social Forum in Detroit]?

T: The immense amount of creativity out there and passion people have to remake the world. A world that will serve everybody's needs. I remember one gal had a t-shirt, which was indicative of the whole feel in the air: "Justice... not just us." And for me that speaks to the universality and community of all human needs.

M: It seems overwhelming to think about the needs of not just myself but all the world? How are we going to get to care really about others needs in real action ways?

T: First we have to dispel the myth of scarcity. And share the consciousness of abundance. Secondly, we have to abandon strategies for needs....

    NVC WORKSHOP
    SATURDAY, JULY 24 @ 10:00 AM - NOON

NVC is a powerful technique for staying true to ourselves and connected with others even in the face of fear and conflict.

In this introduction you will learn to:
  • Express Yourself Honestly, without holding blame, shame, criticism, or fear.
  • Listen with Compassion and Empathy, without hearing blame or criticism, even in the face of conflict and hard-to-hear messages.

  • Participants will be invited to continue and deepen their practice if they wish, through the ongoing practice group at Gaia House.

This study is a non-dogmatic exploration of the historical Jesus.
