Voices

"It was surprising to see Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement, described on the Glenn Beck show as a Marxist. Beck himself acknowledged that he had no idea who "the Marxist Dorothy Day" is, though he supposed she must be known to other Marxists.

"Day, who died in 1980 at the age of 83, was accustomed to being called names. Though no Marxist, she was an unapologetic radical -- which meant, for her, a determination to get to the root of social problems -- both in human selfishness and greed, and in the social structures build on selfishness and greed. Although she spent her life living among the destitute, practicing the Works of Mercy -- feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless in her House of Hospitality -- she believed that personal charity was not enough. She believed that charity must be combined with social justice (Beck's fearsome "code word"). By that, she meant that it was not enough just to feed the poor and hungry; it was important to protest and challenge the structures and systems that keep so many people poor and hungry."

~Robert Ellsberg

"It is not a new president that we need but a new kind of movement. We need a movement that has a spiritual dimension and affirms and builds on what the 2008 election revealed: the deep yearning of Americans (and really all people on the planet) for a world in which love, kindness, generosity, ethical and ecological sanity, awe and wonder at the grandeur of the universe, and commitment to a higher meaning for our lives are valued over the pursuit of money, power, sexual conquest, and fame, which have been extolled as central values by corporate media and enshrined in the workings of the global capitalist system. At the Seder table, we invite you to ask how you can help get this kind of spiritual consciousness introduced into the discourse of secular liberal and progressive social change movements, NGOs, and liberal political parties. We invite you to make this discussion a central part of your Passover Seder this year."

    HIGHER ROADS TO PEACE
    APRIL 5-6
    SIUC

Since the late nineteenth century, Palestine and Israel have been the focal point of conflict between Jews and Arabs. This conference will step back from the fray. It will explore ways in which ethics and mutual understanding might offer a higher road to peace than the clash of propaganda and force of arms. SIUC would like to invite all who are interested in peace in the Middle East to participate in an interdisciplinary symposium at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on April 5 and 6, 2010.

Speakers: Mohammed Abu Nimer (American University), Tomis Kapitan (Northern Illinois University), Brian Klug (Oxford University; formerly chair of the Department of Philosophy at Saint Xavier University, Chicago, where he is now a Fellow of the College of Arts & Sciences), Hilla Medalia (Film Artist), John Pawlikowski (Catholic Theological Union, part of the ecumenical cluster of theological schools at the University of Chicago)

Visit the website to register or for more information.

    CWU WORLD HUNGER SALE
    APRIL 7-10
    NEWMAN CENTER

Church Women United has reminded us that the secret to the success of their annual World Hunger Sale is the donors, volunteers and shoppers who support it. Plan now to take your donations -- any good, usable items -- to the Newman Center on Wednesday and Thursday, April 7-8. Baked goods, plants and auction items are especially welcome. If you like working for a good cause and can spare some time April 7-10, please call Margie Parker at 549-7193. Pickup trucks and drivers are particularly needed.

Please remember that the proceeds will help feed the hungry through nine local and six worldwide agencies: Good Samaritan Ministries, Bethel AME's "Feed My Sheep" soup kitchen, the Women's Center, Senior Citizens Meals-on-Wheels, Attucks and I Can Read Tutorial Programs, New Zion Baptist Church's Summer Lunch Program, Family Advocacy Services and the Guadalupe Fund (for farmworkers), CROP, UNICEF, ECHO, Heifer Project, Marion Medical Mission, and For Kids' Sake (orphanages in Bangladesh).
